Have you been looking to travel somewhere out West but don’t know where to start? Venture out to one of the hidden gems of the California & Arizona area – the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, located in Needles, California, right next to the Arizona border, is one of the few remaining natural stretches of land near the lower portion of the Colorado River. This refuge is home to plants, birds, mammals, and amphibians of all sizes, shapes, and colors!
The refuge office is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and can answer any questions you may have. To find the office, take a right after entering the front of the park and follow the signs. Note there are many places you must go only on foot in order to protect the refuge. Maps can be acquired in the refuge or online at the refuge’s official website. As a visitor, you may go on a variety of adventures, which include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, and canoeing. More than 14,000 acres are up for the exploring. Boating and fishing at the refuge’s Topock Marsh is a favorite for thousands. Others enjoy the view at Topock Gorge. Be sure to remember your camera and take lots of pictures while you are there!
An exciting Havasu National Wildlife Refuge opportunity is birding. Whether you are an amateur or have been on many bird-watching excursions in the past, this refuge offers an ideal setting. Common birds you are almost certain to see include herons, egrets, grebes, turkey vultures, and pelicans. However, keep your eyes peeled; you may be one of the lucky ones to spot the extremely rare Pacific Loon or the equally rare White-Faced Ibis. Popular locations for birding include Pintail Slough, Fivemile Landing, Catfish Paradise, and Bermuda Pasture.
Love exploring the outdoors? You’ll definitely want to check out nearby Lake Mohave. Located north of Bullhead City, Arizona, Lake Mohave is only a 30-minute drive from the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. At Lake Mohave, getting a boat rental in Arizona is an excellent idea, especially if you enjoy water skiing or jet skiing. Beautiful landscape lines the lake and a variety of water activities exist. With 67 miles of lake and hundreds of beaches that are easy to get to, you and your travel companions are sure to have wonderful time jet skiing. Many beaches can only be accessed by boat, so your AZ boat rental will ensure the ultimate experience.
The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge is just one place people vacation to discover the natural beauty of Arizona and California. Because of many regulations set to protect the refuge, this vacationing spot really is as serene as it sounds. The next time you are thinking of planning a trip, keep this southwestern location in mind!
