A Couple’s Guide to Newark, NJ

by rlaurendeau on July 28, 2010

A less than half hour drive from the heart of New York City will take you to New Jersey’s largest city – Newark.  Across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan, you can find a city brimming with adventure through kayaking, camping, art museums, aquariums, fine dining, shopping, site seeing, and more. Newark has many great places for couples of any age.
The Newark area offers a variety of art museums for couples to explore; this city has been known for its great commitment to both art and culture. One of the most commonly visited museums is Montclair Art Museum, just a 20-minute van ride from Newark.  Collections of Native American Art, 18th and 19th Century American Art, and Modern and Contemporary Art are found adorning the walls of this museum. Hours are from noon – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults and group rates are available.
Another heavily visited museum is the Newark Museum, found directly in town.  Not only does this museum include exhibits of continents around the world such as Africa and Asia, but it also includes an opportunity to discover more about natural sciences in its own planetarium and mini zoo.  Be sure to watch out for their large boa constrictor!  Admission is $10 and hours are Wednesday through Friday noon – 5:00 p.m.  Saturday and Sunday hours are 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. except in the months of July – September when they open at noon.
Just a few of the many local attractions couples can enjoy around Newark include:
Dinner theaters
Jazz bands
Historical garden tours
Carriage rides
Winery tours
Shopping (take your van to ensure plenty of room for newfound treasures!)
For an outdoor activity, we highly suggest horseback riding.  A one-hour drive in your NJ passenger van rental will take you to Echo Lake Stables. Trail rides follow a beautiful mountainside, complete with running streams and century-old rock walls.  Echo Lake offers numerous trail rides as well as a Friday and Saturday night adventure of horseback riding under the stars. On this nighttime ride, you will ride through woods and streams by the moonlight. Upon campsite arrival, you will enjoy an old-fashioned, western cookout. You and your travel companions will play fun games, line dance, listen to live entertainment, and take a hayride. If you are lucky, someone may even bring a guitar!  The cost of this nighttime ride is $60 per person which includes an all-you-can-eat cookout and a night of unforgettable fun in the peacefulness of the mountains.
You can also put your Newark van rental to good use as you explore the New Jersey coast.  A waterfront restaurant, only a ten-mile drive from Newark, you cannot afford to miss is the Chart House, located in Weehawken, New Jersey.  The Chart House guarantees one of the best views you will ever see, as you dine along the skyline of New York City and view the lights of buildings, including the Empire State Building.  Superb specialties include seafood and steak such as coconut crunchy shrimp and prime rib; however, The Chart House also has an excellent chopped spinach salad we personally recommend. Also, don’t forget to order your dessert first!  The hot chocolate lava cake is a must but needs to be ordered before the meal as it is only cooked special upon request. After dinner, check out the outdoor balcony, which is a perfect place for you, your date, and other couples dining with you to snap picturesque memories of the night, complete with a background of the New York skyline.
