If you are looking for a great state park in Indiana, we recommend that you check out Turkey Run State Park in Marshall, Indiana. Turkey Run is a great getaway just west of the Greenwood and Indianapolis area, perfect for singles, families, adults, and even groups. You can decide to enjoy Turkey Run State Park just for a day or for much longer due to the numerous activities available at and nearby the park.
This IN state park is known for its hiking trails that run through sandstone cliffs, along the banks of Sugar Creek, and through densely wooded areas. The trails range from easy to rugged and are anywhere from a half mile to three miles in length, giving you a variety of trails types and sights. Adults and children of all ages have been known to enjoy these Indiana trails.
Other activities and attractions you might want to check out at Turkey Run State Park include the following:
- Fishing – you can catch bluegill, bass, and other fish in Indiana’s scenic Sugar Creek that runs through Turkey Run State Park. Note that an Indiana fishing license is required; call the Indiana DNR for more info.
- Swimming – although swimming in Sugar Creek is not allowed, Turkey Run does have an Olympic-size swimming pool and wading pool that everyone can enjoy and beat the heat on a hot Indiana summer day.
- Horseback Riding – the Turkey Run Saddle Barn is open April through October so you can enjoy miles of guided bridle trails throughout the park.
- Canoeing – although Turkey Run does not operate its own canoe outfitters, you can find many local companies that rent canoes, tubes, kayaks, and more so you can enjoy the waters of Sugar Creek and its picturesque shores. Depending on where you canoe, you may even pass under one or more covered bridges!
- Picnicking – Turkey Run has picnic tables near the Saddle Barn and at the main parking lot so you can enjoy a nice lunch outdoors.
- Nature Center and Planetarium – from nature hikes to planetarium programs, the state park’s interpretive naturalists can give you an in-depth look at the area’s plants, animals, and unique geological features.
Additionally, this Indiana state park is a great place to camp! They have 213 Class A campsites, complete with electric hookups and modern restrooms. We recommend that if you’re flying into Indianapolis or are coming from that region that you get an Indianapolis RV rental. Standard rates range from approximately $10 to $35 a night, depending on what type of site you want (primitive, full hookup, electric, etc.) and what day of the week you are staying at the park. Note that there is a slight rate increase on holidays and taxes are not included in listed prices.
But no matter how you look at it, staying at the campground in an IN motorhome rental may be a lot more affordable and convenient, especially if you have a large family or are camping with friends. One room at the Turkey Run Inn, although quite nice, can cost anywhere from $92 to $137 a night for only one room. Plus, you don’t have the fun and convenience of bringing your own food, enjoying an evening campfire, or sleeping in the great outdoors.
Another thing of note about Turkey Run State Park is that it has many historic sites right on the premises. A log church, grist mill, and early pioneer home are just a few of the unique and educational attractions at this Indiana state park. You will also want to visit the Narrows Covered Bridge, built in 1882 and still standing today!
From education to outdoor recreation, Turkey Run is a great place to visit for your next vacation. You may decide to make a summer weekend trip or stay for a week or more, and we are sure that you will be glad you did. Turkey Run really is one of Indiana’s best state parks.
