What better way to see the rugged and majestic state of Alaska than by touring the state in a comfortable motorhome? In previous posts about Alaska, we have included some RV tour guidance, giving you some destination ideas and itineraries for various timelines or agendas (such as a 14-day tour or fishing tour). In this post, we help you get an idea of where you can go and what you can see if you have nine full days to commit to the Alaskan countryside.
While we roll out a more detailed description below, here’s what you can expect in general. This nine-day tour will take you to many places throughout AK, including Anchorage, Seward, Cooper Landing, Kenai River, Homer, Mt. Alyeska, Matanuska Valley, Talkeetna, Denali National Park, and Fairbanks. Please note that while this Alaskan RV tour takes nine days, you will want to add one extra day on both ends to allow for your flight schedule in and out of Anchorage, AK.
When you arrive in Anchorage, be sure to pick up your Alaska RV rental as soon as possible. You will want to make arrangements with the rental company, so you can be sure to get your motorhome and have it ready to hit the road. Likely, you will want to stock up on food supplies and any other necessities before you leave the Anchorage area.
Here are some sights you will want to see at each stop or en route (note that the destination in parentheses is where you will want to overnight):
- Day One (Anchorage/Seward) – on your scenic drive from Anchorage to Seward, be sure to watch for whales and other wildlife. You may even want to catch a one-hour cruise to Portage Glacier.
- Day Two (Seward) – take a cruise to Fox Island for an all-you-can-eat salmon barbecue. If you’re a fisherman, you will want to be sure to cast a line for some of Seward’s trophy Halibut.
- Day Three (Homer) – on your way to Homer, be sure to stop at Cooper Landing to take a nice and easy float trip down the green waters of the Upper Kenai.
- Day Four (Homer) – in Homer, you can drive out to Homer Spit for some great views or take the Danny J boat to Halibut cove, a unique local community of artists. Or, you may just want to spend a day exploring the beach.
- Day Five (Girdwood/Matanuska Valley) – be sure to stop en route at Girdwood to take the tram to the top of Mt. Aleyska.
- Day Six (Denali National Park) – on your way to Denali, pull over in Talkeetna to take an afternoon riverboat safari, where you can possibly see wildlife and even Mt. McKinley.
- Day Seven (Denali) – making use of your motorhome rental in Alaska, take the day-long 95-mile scenic drive through Denali National Park on the Denali National Park Road.
- Day Eight (Fairbanks) – today, your destination is Fairbanks, a town that is nearby the North Pole where you can visit Santa’s house!
- Day Nine (Anchorage) – upon returning to Anchorage, take some time to enjoy this Alaskan city’s downtown, checking out one or more of its museums.
After your last full day in Anchorage, you will need to return your Alaskan RV rental and prepare for your flight home. However, be sure to pick up a few souvenirs before you leave. You will want to remember your nine-day Alaskan adventure, and perhaps one day even return for more.
