If you mix the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains with the scenic rivers and unique nature preserves, you will know you have arrived in North Carolina’s High Country. This portion of NC is known to be a mecca for people looking to enjoy outdoor adventure and recreation, to visit some of the state’s most renown state parks, and to explore NC culture at local wineries, shopping centers, historical attractions, and more.
Many people travel, especially this time of year, to NC’s northern mountain area to take advantage of outdoor winter sporting attractions. You can downhill ski and snowboard at one of several ski resorts in this region. Or, if you prefer to stay indoors while your friends hit the slopes, you can shop at some of the resort’s unique boutiques or sip a cup of hot chocolate at the lodge.
During the spring, summer, and fall months when the snow is long gone, visitors travel to North Carolina for other reasons. Here are just a few activities you can enjoy in the High Country during the warmer months:
- Book an RV rental in NC and stay at one of the many state parks in the area, including Stone Mountain State Park and New River State Park among many others.
- Ride the Watauga River on a whitewater rafting or kayaking excursion.
- Experience the Revolutionary War drama “Horn in the West” in Boone, NC.
- Enjoy some fresh cheese at the Ashe County Cheese Company in West Jefferson and then top it off with some wine found at a North Carolina winery in the Yadkin Valley.
- Take a scenic drive in your NC motor home rental through the Blue Ridge mountains or Grandfather Mountain State Park.
- Hike the trails near Linville Falls and Linville Gorge, where you’re sure to see some awe-inspiring landscapes.
- Climb Grandfather Mountain. On a clear day, you can see the city of Charlotte, which is more than 100 miles away!
