New Jersey Day Trip Ideas

Because you may not want to spend your entire vacation on the beach or at your resort, day trips are a great way to explore the region and get to know about the area. Always within easy driving distance, a day trip can almost give you a “vacation within a vacation,” allowing you get out and about. Plus, you can center a day trip around your unique interests, like history, shopping, arts and entertainment, and more! You name it, and we bet there’s a day-trip idea waiting there for you.

In December, we wrote about two different types of NJ day trips that you can take to New York City, and we recommend that you take one of them at least some time during your lifetime. However, if you are making Newark, New Jersey or the New Jersey shore your vacation destination, you may want to know what other day trips are available in the New Jersey area.

So, in this blog post, we hope to give you a few more ideas of interesting day trips you may want to take while vacationing in New Jersey. You will want to note that all of the following attractions are within easy driving distance (less than two hours or so) of the Newark area in your NJ passenger van rental:

  • Atlantic City – if you want a day filled with gaming, high-class entertainment, booming nightlife, watersports, golfing, great restaurants, and much, much more, then Atlantic City, NJ is where you want to take your next day trip. You can find a little bit of everything here, so if you’re looking to please a group of people with diverse interests, then Atlantic City (just under two hours south of Newark) may be your answer.
  • Tomahawk Lake – although lesser-known than Atlantic City, Tomahawk Lake is also a great day trip idea, especially if you have kids. This water park features swimming areas, row boats, paddle boats, adult and child-size bumper boats, an arcade, an outdoor beer garden, 18-hole miniature golf course, and many other outdoor recreational activities. If you are taking your NJ 12 passenger van rental, Tomahawk Lake is under an hour’s drive from Newark, New Jersey.
  • Ballyowen Golf Club – want to spend a day hitting the links? Then, you should check out this course, rated the #1 Public Golf Course in New Jersey by a number of publications including Golfweek and Zagat. Ballyowen is a Crystal Springs course and is located in Hamburg, NJ.
  • Cape May Lighthouse – situated about two hours down the coast from Newark in Cape May Point State Park, you can visit a piece of American history at the Cape May Lighthouse. This lighthouse is one of the few in NJ where visitors can actually climb to the top and get a great view of the coast. You can also check out the visitor’s center and museum shop to learn more about this NJ lighthouse and pick up some swag.

These day-trip destinations only scratch the surface of the places you can visit while vacationing in New Jersey. However, we hope that we have piqued your interest so that you can begin to explore all that the Garden State has to offer year round.
