The Alaska Zoo

Touted to be one of Anchorage Alaska’s most-visited attractions, you would be amiss if you traveled to the great state of Alaska without visiting the Alaska Zoo. What began in 1966 with one man and his elephant has blossomed into a full-fledged zoo and safe haven for more than 100 birds and mammals.

So why do we recommend the Alaska Zoo? The great thing about this AK attraction is that

it is committed to rescuing both orphaned and injured animals of all shapes and sizes.Over 200,000 visitors come to the Alaska Zoo annually to see its variety of animals, including but not limited to a brown bear, a baby yak, seals, foxes, wolverines, and even a tiger!

The AK Zoo also has several educational encounters that are great for both kids and adults. To take in all that the Alaska Zoo offers, you may want to book an Anchorage RV rental and spend more than one day exploring the animals and their habitats. Here is an overview of a few of the zoo adventures you may find interesting (for more details, contact the Alaska Zoo directly):

  • Keeper Encounters: For a cost, this program has two options. You can either shadow a zookeeper for the day and get up close to many animals (the more expensive option), or you can have a one-on-one encounter with the animal of your choice and its zookeeper.
  • Wildlife Wednesdays: If you’re in Anchorage on a second Wednesday of the month (between October 2009 and April 2010), you can come to the Alaska Zoo to check out their free science lecture series. Topics include everything from AK wildlife and climate change to the Golden Eagles of Denali National Park. They even have a fun activity for the kids!
  • Guided Zoo Tours: Led by zoo staff and trained volunteers, you can get the full Alaska Zoo experience. They offer several types of tours, depending on what you want and how much you want to pay. (The more behind the scenes, the pricier the tours become.)

These expeditions are just a few of the animal experiences the Alaska Zoo offers between its open hours of 10:00 am and 4:30 pm. And you cannot visit the zoo without stopping by its unique gift shop to pick up a few souvenirs or its coffee shop to get a shot of espresso or warm cup of java.

To top off your zoo adventure, we recommend prolonging your brush with nature by camping in an Alaska motorhome rental. Alaskan visitors find the combination of Anchorage’s wildlife attraction and breath-taking landscapes to be just the reason they chose AK for their vacation, and you will too!
