New England in the Fall

Yes, I know, we’re still in the middle of summer – who wants to think about going back to school and cold weather? Well, if you’ve ever dreamed of visiting New England in the fall, you do!

Autumn is the busiest tourism season in New England, so if you want to take a scenic tour this fall, you need to start planning now.  If you’ve never been to New England, you’ll be amazed at the size of this tiny corner of the U.S.  While you might consider taking a train ride through the northeastern states, the best way to enjoy the scenery is definitely by car.

New England is known for its amazing fall foliage, not only because the colors of the leaves are so varied and brilliant, but also because of its spectacular geographic features.  Since most of the area features rolling farmland and steep mountains, an unexpectedly gorgeous view can be waiting for you around every bend in the road.

This amazing geography is exactly why driving by car is by far the best way to visit the area – every drive offers the opportunity for a new and breathtaking view.  Whether you plan out a route through the White Mountains in New Hampshire or joyride through the hills of Connecticut, you’re bound to be awed by the beauty that awaits you.

When planning to visit New England, you should plan to spend at least a couple of nights at different hotels along the way.  If you live in the northeastern U.S., you might think you could visit the area in a weekend – but did you know that driving from northern New Jersey to the heart of New Hampshire takes about 7 hours, without a break?  And that’s driving on turnpikes and highways.  If you want to take a leisurely drive through the New England countryside, you’ve got to set aside a minimum of three days.

Of course, a vacation that is planned around driving through the countryside will put tons of miles on your car, and the hilly and mountainous landscape will add to the wear and tear.  Rather than worry about the damage you’re doing to your car, or what will happen if you get a flat tire or other car trouble, why not consider a car rental or mini van rental for your trip?  Whether you live within driving distance of the area or are planning to fly in from another part of the country, you can easily find a rental service on your way to New England.  In fact, if you fly into Newark International Airport (in Newark, NJ), you could pick up a car rental nearby and be in New England in under two hours (and catch a glimpse of New York City on your way!).  In addition to easing your mind while on vacation, you can have fun enjoying a new or luxury car for far less than it’d cost to buy one!

It’s important to note, though, that if this is a trip you’ve been planning to take, you need to start booking rentals and hotels (and flights, if you’re from outside the area) sooner rather than later.  The last thing you want to find when planning a fun fall getaway is that the hotel or B&B you want to stay it is already booked!
