The Pocono Mountains is a resort area in northeastern Pennsylvania, near the NJ and NY borders. It’s one of Pennsylvania’s most popular tourist destinations, and is a favorite winter vacation spot for many residents and tourists of the Northeastern U.S.
Because of the Poconos proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City, it makes a convenient day or weekend trip for residents of NJ, southeastern PA, and southern NY. Residents of northern NJ (towns like Sussex, Morristown, etc.) are close enough to enjoy the Poconos in just a day, while those living in the greater NY or Philadelphia areas generally opt for a weekend trip. Though residents of these areas primarily think of the Poconos as the best place to visit for a winter weekend getaway, there’s actually a ton of things to do there in every season.
In the summer, visitors can admire the Poconos’ breathtaking views from one of more than 150 lakes, which are perfect for canoeing, or while hiking or biking on one of the many trails scattered throughout the mountain range. For a fun and affordable trip, why not rent an RV and take the family up to one of the numerous campgrounds in the area? Once there, you have the option of experiencing the Poconos’ amazing natural beauty up close and personal, or admiring it from the road as you head toward one of many other attractions in the area, including several waterparks, the Claws’n'Paws Wild Animal Park, and the Big Wheel Family Roller Skating Center. For more adventurous souls, try horseback riding, paintball, or whitewater rafting!
The Poconos are open year round, and there are plenty of activities in the spring and fall, too. Few things are more enjoyable than going on a hike through the mountains on a brisk fall day and watching the leaves change color right before your eyes! If you happen to visit on an especially chilly day, you can always take a ride on a real stream train through the area; Steamtown National Historic Site is located in Scranton, PA, just a short drive from the heart of the Pocono Mountains. The Poconos also feature several seasonal festivals and special events, like the Autumn Festival, which is scheduled for October 10-11, 2009.
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the great skiing and other snow sports options on the mountains! The Poconos has gained a well-earned reputation as a fabulous ski resort area, and skiing enthusiasts will enjoy the many trails devoted to both cross-country or downhill skiing. If skiing’s not your cup of tea, there are scores of other outdoor activities to experience, from snowshoeing and snowtubing to ice fishing or riding a snowmobile. And if you don’t like the snow (or cold) at all, there are plenty of shopping malls and spas to enjoy!
So the next time you’re thinking of planning a road trip or weekend getaway, think of seeing the Poconos Mountains in the NE United States in an RV Rental – no matter what time of year, they’ll have something fun waiting for you!
